Navigating Puzzling Clinical Scenarios: Strategies for Challenging Moments in Therapy

A single line forms tangled knots that gradually become smaller, leading to a simple drawing of a light bulb inside a green circle, symbolizing the process from confusion to clarity and ideas.

This immersive workshop is designed for clinicians seeking practical strategies to navigate complex and often puzzling situations in therapy. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, facilitated discussion, and group exercises, this session integrates evidence-based practices and real-world experience to help clinicians confidently address challenging scenarios. All strategies presented are informed by research-backed principles from cognitive behavioural therapy and attachment-based interventions.

Themes covered include dispelling common myths and misconceptions clients bring from social media; addressing relational issues when the source of client distress is a third party (e.g., parent, partner, or child); challenges and clinical pitfalls when clients seek the therapist’s personal opinion or decision-making; and working with a client who feels “stuck”, or a client “over-identifies” with a self-made diagnosis. When time permits, participants can also ask about their own challenging situations for discussion.

Workshop:

  • Responding to “pop psychology” and misinformation
  • Working with the “Person Not in the Room”
  • Navigating requests for therapist advice
  • Clients feeling “stuck” or experiencing ambivalence, avoidance, and stagnation
  • Managing rupture and fostering repair in the therapeutic relationship
  • Client self-diagnosis

Court-Ordered Parenting Assessments (S.30)

Parents face numerous difficult decisions when they decide to separate. Sometimes, when parents are unable to come to a decision about child-related issues such as parenting time and decision-making, or when there are concerns about parenting capacity, a mental health professional is asked by the family court to provide recommendations on the matter.

A parenting assessment (or Section 30) is a comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of the children’s needs, the parents’ ability and functioning, and the various relationships and dynamics within a family.

My role as an evaluator is to gather information and make recommendations in the best interests of the child(ren). I provide recommendations to the court on parental decision-making (custody) and parenting time (visitation) that are in the best interests of the child(ren). I also answer specific questions posed by the court. The S.30 evaluation is a process, which does not guarantee an outcome for either party.
